Jim Taylor has been building custom designed luxury homes for over 30 years. Through his company, gold Coast unique homes, he’s completed some of the Coast’s most spectacular and innovative homes for literally hundreds of discerning clients.

“It’s a family tradition,” he says, “My grandfather was a builder in Charters Towers for many years before moving his family to Brisbane. He died before I was born, but had passed on much of his extensive woodworking and carpentry knowledge to my father. Growing up, I used to help dad from time to time and later inherited many of my grandfather’s original hand tools. Today, I value these immensely.  My father, who was a very astute businessman, passed on a lot of good advice; I guess you could say building is in the family’s genes.”

Brisbane Teenager Growing Up in The 1970’s

Like most Brisbane teenagers in the 1970s, Jim was attracted to the Gold Coast’s beaches and surfing culture. “Every weekend, my mates and I would pile into our station wagons and head to the beach with the best surfing breaks,” he says. “If the surf was no good, we’d go water skiing at Tallebudgera or at the old Cabarita Ski Gardens. The Coast was an exciting place back then and developing quickly, so when the time was right it was a natural progression to start my own building company here.”

The intervening years have not diminished Jim’s love of exercise and the outdoor lifestyle. He and his wife Carmel enrolled their two sons in the Nippers at Mermaid Beach Surf Club over 15 years ago and while the boys are now young men, Jim can often be found catching up with his old mates at the club. He and his family are also keen skiers, so when time allows the luxury of a week away, the ski slopes make for an enjoyable change of scenery.

A Personal Interest in Every Home He Builds

Jim says being a relatively low-volume builder and concentrating on the top end of the market allows him to take a personal interest in every home he builds.  “Our company’s vision has always been to be the first choice among discerning homeowners when they consider building a new home. In fact, many of the homes we’ve built have been on the personal recommendations of friends and business associates who’ve also engaged our building services.”

“Unlike most builders, who offer a standard range of floor plans, we’ve geared our business to delivering individual homes that stand out from the crowd. These days, we build across a range of styles, from luxury waterfront residences to spacious acreage homes and stunning urban villas,” he says. “Our highly qualified in-house design team allows us to incorporate clients’ own ideas, while at the same time being able to advise of the latest trends, building materials and advanced environmental technology.”

Prestigious Awards From The Queensland Master Builders Association and Others

With a steady build program throughout the current economic downturn the company has been able to retain virtually all of its long term employees. This has been a real advantage as the skills, experience and knowledge acquired over many years have been retained within the company. “It’s reflected in the very high standard of joinery and internal finishes, luxury kitchens and bathroom designs that in turn, increase each home’s market appeal and potential re-sale value,” he stated. Over the years, Gold Coast Unique Homes has been recognised with a number of prestigious awards from the Queensland Master Builders Association and others. This recognition is in no small way attributable to Jim’s commitment to customer service.

A recent innovation in this area has been to engage experienced translators to assist overseas purchasers. “We’re building a lot of homes for Japanese, Chinese and European clients,” he said. “When English is not a client’s first language, trying to come to terms with the hundreds of decisions required to design and specify a new home can be a very daunting task. Our team makes the process so much more enjoyable and the homeowners feel much more relaxed about the whole build process.”

Innovative Designs at Most Affordable Prices

Jim stressed that while people generally associate custom-built homes with substantially increased building costs, this is not necessarily so. With his many years of experience and long-standing relationships with building suppliers he’s been able to refine his building techniques to ensure clients receive innovative designs at most affordable prices. “We build on the basis of fixed price contracts, ensuring there are no unplanned cost blow-outs when the final progress payment falls due. High volume builders are simply not geared to accommodate custom design changes and building costs can rapidly escalate,” he says.

Gold Coast Unique Homes offers free design and free interior decorating assistance and provides a 25 year structural guarantee with every home it builds.
